Here is a video from when noise was first discovered:

Thanks for your help,

Adam
on this video the dipstick is dancing about, has it pushed out the tube or stick, just thinking bottom end crank pressure. one i heard like this at a dealers after many hours of checking turned out to be a balance shaft had gone out of sync, this is seemingly impossible as its gear driven and should not go out of sync.
i would do the basics first though and check the timing then do a cylinder compression check for each pot.

this shows the balance shafts and drives.

Dipstick handle is broken at the top, hence dancing.

....back to the original post for one moment!!

Hello All, I’m hoping to get a proper look at this later in the week.
If I find it is a big end bearing, what is the procedure for re-shelling?
Can I Just buy the standard shells and fit?
Do I need to take any measurements?

Many thanks as always,

Adam

The shells will be the same measurement as those you take out that will be marked on the back of the shell.
As said before drop the crank journal first if thats kaput then you can stop there and make a decision.
Re shelling is not the ideal solution as you may have damage elsewhere but given costs it may be worth a go as it will be your time and about 50.00 quid for the end shells so maybe worth a punt.
When you get the cap off post the image on here.
Did you manage to get oil pressure checked and do you know what cylinder is at fault yet?

Hi Adam to expose the bottom end you will have to remove the oil sump, then remove the oil strainer, then the oil feed pipe then about twenty bolts that secure the vras. with the vras still in place you will get a very limited view of the crank uptp cylinder 3. Turning the crank over on the top of the flywheel.
Hope this helps, where i am up to

This might help regards compression values......

Compression
(kPa {kgf/cm2, psi} [rpm])

WL, WL Turbo
Standard 2942 {30, 427} [200]
Minimum 2648 {27, 384} [200]

If the compression in one or more cylinders is low, pour a small amount of clean engine oil into the cylinder and recheck the compression. (1) If the compression increases, the piston, the piston rings, or cylinder wall may be worn and overhaul is required. (2) If the compression stays low, a valve may be stuck or improperly seated and overhaul is required.

there were 2 very similar but different problems on this thread so I have split the thread as best as I can.

Hopefully it will make it clearer who is being answered :D

Hammering Noise from engine -reason found!!

After removing sump and VRAS - a really unpleasant job - I found a big end bearing had completely broken up and was in sump oil.
Surfaces look like this:-

Looks like the shell has gone! Is that the end cap?
That is that for that lump mate.
What was the crank journal like?

Top photo is cap, bottom 2 crank.
Shell has definitely gone, and is now in bits in the sump.

Bottom two didnt come through. Its quite amazing that the oil light didnt show up!
Any clue as to what went wrong, was the oil pick up pipe OK?

I didn't really have the energy to explore any further, the strainer looked clear - just a few bits of shell stuck to it.
