Knocking noise - still no closer

yes i agree but that was just a way of saying drive the bongo while someone puts there hand on the top of the front struts, then you may be able to locate the knock. you could achieve the same by removing the bonnet and get someone to sit on the front while driving it, it may at least give you which side the knock is and help pin point it.

We once came back from Bristol with me sat backwards on the wing of my pal's 103E Ford Pop, arm round headlight and holding a jam jar filled with petrol syphoned from the tank.

Held higher than carb and syphon started we refilled when the jar ran out.

Bet they don't allow 'Get you home' jobbies like that now.

And it was jolly cold.

Had my wife put her hand on top of the dash the other day but she couldn't feel the knocking through that.

I honestly don't think it is the strut bearing though. From listening I think it is wishbone related or possibly steering rack.

I noticed it can be quite prolonged if the steering stays in the same place and it's a bit bumpy. It seems to make the noise with the steering in roughly the same place each time. Just a bit off centre to the right, but will only make the noise if the suspension is being compressed. Bumpy road gives multiple prolonged knocks a dip tends to give one knock. Once the steering is straightened or if you are going left it won't make the knock at all. Almost 100% sure it is nearside (I know noise can travel etc.) But it is quite loud and passengers all agree it sounds like it is that side. Also the abnormal tyre wear on the Westside backs this up.

Very frustrating! It sounds bad enough now to make anyone with any mechanical sympathy cringe!

if its suspension wishbone on the nearside you could poss feel it through your feet while someone else drives if your sat in the passenger side, if its steering rack it should be felt at the wheel or on the column. it does now sound like the rack may be worn on one well used or impact damaged tooth.

could even be a failing bottom universal joint on the steering shaft. try wobbling the steering wheel with the engine not running and feeling the shaft/uj

With it being as pronounced a noise as it now appears to be, I would hope an experienced hand like Ian Taylor would now be able to track down the cause. Here's hoping.

It does appear to have been the ball joint on the wishbone. Wishbone replaced and the noise appears to have gone.
