Help please - Starter motor/Waeco cruise control

Post by psquiddy » Tue May 12, 2015 1:47 pm

I am fitting a Waeco cruise control to my 2 litre petrol/lpg Bongo - I have connected everything up and now the starter motor wont disengage.

It is also starting the engine at key position 2 not 3 as normal.

I think the cruise control may be a red herring as it also did this before I connected any of its wiring, but I had the dashboard removed and disconnected at the time and decided it was something to do with that.

Assuming that the switch hasn't come partially loose from the back of the ignition switch then I would say you have a faulty ignition switch. just be careful you don't burn out the starter motor.
This is a very common problem on Nissan Micras, the first tell tale is what appears to be just a faulty starter motor till the new one only lasts a few days, but it turns out its actually a sticking ignition switch, you also have to sometimes have a good bit of messing about with the key to get it to start in the first place.

That sounds like good news (I think) - but how the heck do you get at the ignition switch - do you have to remove the steering wheel to get the cowling off?

I think this is a slightly different fault to the one in that link, that one seems to be a faulty ignition barrel (the mechanical part), It sounds like its the ignition switch (the electrical part) that's faulty. The part can be removed separately but not all manufacturers sell it as a separate part, some sell the barrel & switch as a complete part.

Thanks - that link actually sorted things out - up to a point.

While removing the instrument panel I lowered the steering column using the lever underneath it.

When I put it back to the fully up position my starter motor problem went away - which suggests it is probably a bad connection somewhere on or near the ignition switch - so should I persevere and try to fix it or should I leave it alone as it works in my usual driving position?

Just my two-cents worth.......if it is, as it seems, an intermittent connection somewhere, then you need to find and fix it....it will only come back to haunt you :D

I think you are right - I have decided to come back to it after finishing the cruise control installation.

Now I have a problem with the installation. Troubleshooting Test A (from the Waeco manual) checks out fine, but I can not get anything out of Test B.

The engine speed does not change at all. The wiring looks ok and the vacuum connection looks fine (taken from the brake servo). I have tried it with each of the sensitivity settings on the control box but it makes no difference - speed control is taken from SP+ on the back of the dashboard. I have not cut the loop on the Waeco unit yet.

Any suggestions?

Had to cut the loop on my '96 diesel.

Also make certain you use the correct blue/white behind the speedo.

I changed my speedo take off from SP+ to the blue/white from the middle connector - as per
http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... 43#p343243

I went on a test drive and found that c/c worked at about 15mph.

Then I cut the loop and tried again - no difference.

Tried the different sensitivity settings - no difference.

After much head scratching I am beginning to think I have tapped into the wrong wire from the speedo -I used the Blue/White from the central connector block, I have also tried the SP+ terminal - neither worked.

Can someone confirm that these should work on a 2002 2.0l petrol Bongo please.

There are two blue/white wires behind the instrument panel, worth checking you have tapped into the correct one.

SP+ will give you a suitable speed signal. The CC has a min speed that it will engage from (as explained in the manual) so if it's working above 15mph, then there is no problem.

When I said it was working at 15mph - it only works at 15mph.

If I go back to using SP+ there is no chance that I am using the wrong blue/white wire so I might do that.

Is there a way of measuring the output from the speedo with a multimeter so I can check at the connector block by the c/c electrickery module? Would I have to be driving to get a noticeable measurement?

Its a Pulse of approx. fixed amplitude so a simple multi-meter measuring voltage/current won't show anything useful, it will need a Frequency range included on the multi-meter which some do these days.
