Code reader 2.0ltr 2001

Post by Bongolia » Wed Aug 17, 2016 11:38 pm

Bought these on Ebay
MaxiScan Diagnostic MS309 Code Scanner Reader CAN OBDII OBD2 EOBD FOR Autel and
Mazda Bongo Ford Ranger 17 pin to 16 pin OBD Adapter cable in preparation for sorting emissions problems.Expected to rewire to suit but worked straight out of box!
Delighted.
Total cost around twenty quid!

Found two codes in KAM relating to AFM and coolant temp sensor although I believe these were probably induced by my early attempts at a quick fix.
Anyway turned out problem was due to an almost imperceptible crack in the intake duct at the connection to the throttle butterfly housing.
Cleaned out throttle housing and butterfly then Super glue and gaffer tape sorted the split problem until I can locate replacement.
Performance is improved and the induction is quieter too. I have a run to Dorset Steam Fair next week so I will keep an eye on the fuel consumption. I shall expect to see an improvement.
Emission readings are about right for non cat so the cats gone west unfortunately.

Wow - never heard of these working on a Bongo before. I'm guessing it wouldn't work on my 1995 diesel?

Well Bongo seems to drive much better still have to buzz motor to get it moving but performance improved quite a bit. Fuel consumption better too. Brimming it reads 5-7 mpg better over two tanks!!!
Happy bunny :D

Totally missed this post so sorry for slow reply. Kind offer but suspect old 95 model won't know what to do with it (else someone might have sussed how in my 10 years on the forum, though never say never). More importantly its running great so i'm in 'if it aint bust' mode

Great news about your improved mpg.

Is the adaptor like this one? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390688086595
Where do you stick it? !!!

The old diesel is more Ford Ranger than the 2.0L petrol which is Mazda 626 heritage isn't it?

Yes that looks like it. Socket on mine is in glove box upper left has a grey cover.
It seems to be the protocol used by Ford. On site at moment but will check it when I get back.

Hmmm - might take a look to see if mine has one. It'll be a first on here if an old 95 diesel works with OBD i reckon!

To be honest I cannot see what it would pick up on a Bongo diesel as they are mechanically injected.
The scanner will only access engine data and not ABS control codes on the 2.0Ltr.
