How warm is it to sleep in a Bongo?

Hi,

We are looking to buy a Bongo, but my memory is that sleeping in cars can be really cold. So is there insulation in the Bongo? How warm is sleeping in a Bongo in the UK?

I would be really grateful for any guidance on this.

Welcome aboard Adrian.

Ours is unconverted and we've always been warm enough.

The whole of the rear is trimmed and blinds and curtains are fitted, we also have good sleeping bags. You could easily remove the trim and add insulation if required.

Lots of peeps use themal covers on the windows which will make quite a difference but I haven't found them neccessary.

Sorry if I'm slightly off topic and please don't think I'm hijacking the post but it might be of interest to the OP , I'm interested in getting a small compact heater for the bus and was wondering what people would recommend , I could see it being of particular Benefit if sleeping upstairs

Most people use the small elec oil filled radiators
About £20 from arggos I think ( only good if on elec hook up )
Some people have fitted the webasto diesel heaters ( very good blown air heating running of the diesel ) expensive to buy and have fitted
It does get cold in them at nights if it's cold outside ( good quality sleeping bag and a Woolley hat )

We used to use a winter duvet in our boat, we reckon that is warmer than normal sleeping bags. Do you reckon that would do?

Depends on how cold it is outside. It was cold sleeping in my bongo at the weekend, even with a oil filled radiator on all night. Other times it is quite toasty without heating.

My preference is a good quality "Onesie" with the hood and a sleeping bag opened as a quilt.
Genuine "Onsies" are really snugly.

warm as burnt toast
do i need a cancer consultation
we slept dec 15 jan 16 in lincolnshire no probs at all
no electric do das
side panels filled 50% 50% polyester wool
blinds down all windows with simple reflective covers (side and back fabricated from £1 shop items)
we always use a quilt appropriate to the weather.
No safety pj's are ever used in the making of my films or sleeping experiments.

Hot water bottles are good! We take 2 duvets as well (just in case). If on hook-up we have an oil filled radiator, but often find it gets too warm.

If you have a long run before camping the engine (being under you) keeps warm for a long time.

Also - if you sleep downstairs in the winter and close the roof hatch and the thermal blinds while it's still warm downstairs it keeps it really cosy. At other times of the year we usually find it's too warm and so sleep upstairs with all the vents open.

It is as warm as you make it inside the main cabin at least. Summer in UK is totally fine. Early spring and late Autumn is cooler but you can deal with that fairly easy with some extra clothes/hat/fleece over your head etc.

On a campsite you can heat it from a hook up. A little electric oil filled rad can take the chill off.
If you sleep together it is much warmer, each human radiates about the same as a 1KW heater.
An AFT tent can be a bit cold once it hits 7C at night, that is the coldest I have had up there.
The silver foil blinds help a bit downstairs.

Sometimes I sleep with the Mrs. downstairs and sometimes if she needs more space I go up top.

Never been cold in the body in a a Bongo (though in the AFT I use2-3 sleeping bags. Only a chilly face when it starts hitting 8C and below and that is usually avoid with a hat and fleece blanket over your head.

Wondering if anyone has tried electric blankets in place of plug in radiatiors? Use less power and mush easier to store?

Yes, my wife used to use 12 volt blankets, these were adequate but the quality is atrocious

Having taken them apart after failing I really couldn't advise there use to be honest. After that I put a mains socket in the AFT itself and she used a mains powered wool blanket which whilst more expensive was of much better quality. We still keep it up there and my son used it the week between Xmas and New year when we were down at Devises and the canal was frozen over! Along with the oil heater downstairs.
