It turns out it was the low coolant alarm. For some reason it was giving a false signal and then when I pressed the test button it got louder. The alarm was not a type I recognised so it’s been removed and a Haydn alarm fitted.

The noise has gone!

I've fitted a new starter battery, I splashed out and bought a Bosch one and it's a definite improvement. It started on first turn of the key but is still lumpy.
